How to play

A hungry monster stands on the number line holding a sign, say 56. The ground is ticked in steps of your table: 0, 7, 14, 21… Your spoon catapult throws bags of 7. How many bags will land right at the monster?

  1. Pick one or more tables, or Mixed 2–12, and press Start.
  2. Use − and + (or ← →) to choose the number of bags. The bubble shows your choice, and in wave 1 the dotted arc shows where it will land.
  3. Press Launch (Space or Enter), or drag back on the spoon and let go. The further you pull, the more bags.
  4. A direct hit and the monster gulps it down and burps a star. A miss lands on the wrong tick and the game shows the fact you needed, such as “8 × 7 = 56. You sent 7 × 7 = 49.” The monster waits for another try, with its number now marked on the line.
  5. Each wave has 5 monsters and 7 snacks (5 plus 2 spares). There are 3 waves: feed all 15 monsters!

Reduced motion: the snack simply fades from the spoon to where it lands, monsters stand still and there are no sparkles. Aiming is always in whole bags, so there's no timing or dexterity involved: the maths decides every throw.

What it teaches

Munch Launch is a monster math game that turns the number line into a catapult range. The number of bags is the missing factor: to feed the monster holding 56 with bags of 7, you're solving ? × 7 = 56, which is the division fact 56 ÷ 7 = 8.

  • Wave 1, labelled ticks: every tick shows its multiple, and the full arc shows where the snack will land. Children see multiplication as equal jumps along a line, with ×2 to ×5.
  • Wave 2, half the labels: every other label hides and the arc preview is cut short, so children reason that 56 is the 8th jump. Facts go up to ×10.
  • Wave 3, no labels: ×2 to ×12, the monsters wander a little, and one bonus monster wants two helpings: the same total in bags of 7 and then in bags of 6. That shows 6 × 7 = 7 × 6.
  • Sense of size: sending 7 bags when you needed 8 lands one jump short. Seeing how far off a guess was builds number sense, not just recall.

Tips for parents

  • Say the jumps out loud: “7, 14, 21, 28…” while your child counts the ticks to the monster. It's skip counting with a goal.
  • Ask before they launch: “How many bags do you think?” Guessing first, then checking, makes the fact stick.
  • Don't worry about misses. Each miss shows the correct fact and the monster waits for another go. Spare snacks are built in.
  • Try one table at a time until all 15 monsters are fed, then move to Mixed 2–12.

Tips for teachers

  • Number lines on the whiteboard: project wave 1 and ask the class to predict where the snack will land before you launch.
  • Division warm-up: every monster is a missing-factor question. Ask pupils to say the division fact (56 ÷ 7 = 8) as well as the multiplication.
  • Commutativity talk: the two-helpings monster in wave 3 is a ready-made discussion about why 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 land in the same spot.
  • Share a link: /games/munch-launch/?t=6 starts with the 6s, and ?t=6,7 with both.
