The 11 times table

Up to 11 × 9 the 11s have the easiest pattern there is: the digit is just written twice. From 11 × 10 the pattern changes, and a simple trick takes over.

  • 11×1=11
  • 11×2=22
  • 11×3=33
  • 11×4=44
  • 11×5=55
  • 11×6=66
  • 11×7=77
  • 11×8=88
  • 11×9=99
  • 11×10=110
  • 11×11=121
  • 11×12=132

How to learn the 11s

Each line means “11 groups of”. So 11 × 4 = 44 means four groups of 11 make 44. Every answer is just 11 more than the one before: 11, 22, 33, 44, 55…

The highlighted facts, 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

A soccer team has 11 players on the field. Two teams in a match make 11 × 2 = 22 players; 4 teams make 11 × 4 = 44.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 11s easy

Write the digit twice (1 to 9)

11 × a single digit is that digit written twice.

11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 9 = 99

Ten of them plus one more

11 × a number is 10 × the number, plus the number once more. This works for every fact, including 10, 11 and 12.

11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132

Split the digits, add in the middle

For 11 × a two-digit number, write its two digits with a gap and put their sum in the gap (when the sum is 9 or less).

11 × 12: 1 _ 2 → 1, (1 + 2), 2 = 132
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 11 × 1 to 11 × 10:

Double digits up to 99. 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99: from 11 × 1 to 11 × 9 every answer is one digit written twice.

What happens at 10, 11 and 12. The double-digit pattern stops at 99. Then 11 × 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132: each is 11 more than the one before.

The last digit counts up. The last digits of 11 × 1 to 11 × 10 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0: the same as the number you multiply by.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 11 × 11 = 121, then 121 ÷ 11 = 11.

  • 11 ÷ 11 = 1
  • 22 ÷ 11 = 2
  • 33 ÷ 11 = 3
  • 44 ÷ 11 = 4
  • 55 ÷ 11 = 5
  • 66 ÷ 11 = 6
  • 77 ÷ 11 = 7
  • 88 ÷ 11 = 8
  • 99 ÷ 11 = 9
  • 110 ÷ 11 = 10
  • 121 ÷ 11 = 11
  • 132 ÷ 11 = 12
