The 4 times table

Four is just two, twice. Double, then double again, and the 4s fall into place.

  • 4×1=4
  • 4×2=8
  • 4×3=12
  • 4×4=16
  • 4×5=20
  • 4×6=24
  • 4×7=28
  • 4×8=32
  • 4×9=36
  • 4×10=40
  • 4×11=44
  • 4×12=48

How to learn the 4s

Each line means “4 groups of”. So 4 × 4 = 16 means four groups of 4 make 16. Every answer is just 4 more than the one before: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20…

The highlighted facts, 4 × 7 = 28, 4 × 8 = 32 and 4 × 12 = 48, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

Cars have 4 wheels and chairs have 4 legs. Six cars have 4 × 6 = 24 wheels.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 4s easy

Double, double

Double the number, then double the answer.

4 × 7: 7 → 14 → 28

One less than the 5s

4 × a number is the 5s answer minus one of that number.

4 × 9 = 45 − 9 = 36

Picture a square

4 × 4 = 16 is a square number: a 4-by-4 grid of dots. Use it as an anchor for 4 × 3 and 4 × 5.

4 × 5 = 16 + 4 = 20
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 4 × 1 to 4 × 10:

Endings 4, 8, 2, 6, 0. The last digits repeat 4, 8, 2, 6, 0: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28… and every answer is even.

Every other 2s answer. Count in 2s and keep every second number: 2, (4), 6, (8), 10, (12) — those are the 4s.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 4 × 7 = 28, then 28 ÷ 4 = 7.

  • 4 ÷ 4 = 1
  • 8 ÷ 4 = 2
  • 12 ÷ 4 = 3
  • 16 ÷ 4 = 4
  • 20 ÷ 4 = 5
  • 24 ÷ 4 = 6
  • 28 ÷ 4 = 7
  • 32 ÷ 4 = 8
  • 36 ÷ 4 = 9
  • 40 ÷ 4 = 10
  • 44 ÷ 4 = 11
  • 48 ÷ 4 = 12
