How to learn the 8s

Each line means “8 groups of”. So 8 × 4 = 32 means four groups of 8 make 32. Every answer is just 8 more than the one before: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40…

The highlighted facts, 8 × 6 = 48, 8 × 7 = 56 and 8 × 8 = 64, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 8s easy

Double, double, double

Double the number three times.

8 × 6: 6 → 12 → 24 → 48

Ten times, minus two times

8 is 2 less than 10, so take two of the number away from ten of them.

8 × 7 = 70 − 14 = 56

5, 6, 7, 8

The digits count up: 56 = 7 × 8.

8 × 7 = 56
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 8 × 1 to 8 × 10:

Endings count down by 2. The last digits go 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 and repeat: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48…

Inside the 4s and 2s. Every 8s answer is also in the 4s and the 2s tables, because 8 = 2 × 4.

A chessboard square. 8 × 8 = 64 is a square number — a chessboard has 64 squares.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 8 × 6 = 48, then 48 ÷ 8 = 6.

  • 8 ÷ 8 = 1
  • 16 ÷ 8 = 2
  • 24 ÷ 8 = 3
  • 32 ÷ 8 = 4
  • 40 ÷ 8 = 5
  • 48 ÷ 8 = 6
  • 56 ÷ 8 = 7
  • 64 ÷ 8 = 8
  • 72 ÷ 8 = 9
  • 80 ÷ 8 = 10
  • 88 ÷ 8 = 11
