How to learn the 9s

Each line means “9 groups of”. So 9 × 4 = 36 means four groups of 9 make 36. Every answer is just 9 more than the one before: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45…

The highlighted facts, 9 × 6 = 54, 9 × 7 = 63 and 9 × 8 = 72, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

A baseball team fields 9 players. Four teams on the field would be 9 × 4 = 36 players.

Tips & tricks

Four ways to make the 9s easy

The finger trick

Hold up 10 fingers. For 9 × 4, fold down your 4th finger. There are 3 fingers to its left (tens) and 6 to its right (ones).

9 × 4 = 36

Ten times, minus one

9 is one less than 10. Work out 10 × the number, then take one of it away.

9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63

The digits add to 9

From 9 × 1 to 9 × 10, the two digits of the answer always add up to 9.

9 × 8 = 72 → 7 + 2 = 9

Tens digit is one less

In 9 × 6 the tens digit is 6 − 1 = 5. What goes with 5 to make 9? 4. So the answer is 54.

9 × 6 = 54
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 9 × 1 to 9 × 10:

Up one, down one. 09, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90 — the tens go up by one while the ones go down by one.

Mirror answers. The second half mirrors the first: 45 ↔ 54, 36 ↔ 63, 27 ↔ 72, 18 ↔ 81.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 9 × 6 = 54, then 54 ÷ 9 = 6.

  • 9 ÷ 9 = 1
  • 18 ÷ 9 = 2
  • 27 ÷ 9 = 3
  • 36 ÷ 9 = 4
  • 45 ÷ 9 = 5
  • 54 ÷ 9 = 6
  • 63 ÷ 9 = 7
  • 72 ÷ 9 = 8
  • 81 ÷ 9 = 9
  • 90 ÷ 9 = 10
  • 99 ÷ 9 = 11
  • 108 ÷ 9 = 12
