The 10 times table
The 10s are the easiest table of all: to multiply a number by 10, write the number and put a zero on the end.
- 10×1=10
- 10×2=20
- 10×3=30
- 10×4=40
- 10×5=50
- 10×6=60
- 10×7=70
- 10×8=80
- 10×9=90
- 10×10=100
- 10×11=110
- 10×12=120
How to learn the 10s
Each line means “10 groups of”. So 10 × 4 = 40 means four groups of 10 make 40. Every answer is just 10 more than the one before: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50…
The highlighted facts, 10 × 11 = 110 and 10 × 12 = 120, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.
Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.
In real life
A dime is 10 cents, so 7 dimes are 10 × 7 = 70 cents. Ten fingers on each pair of hands: 3 people have 10 × 3 = 30 fingers.
Three ways to make the 10s easy
Put a zero on the end
Write the number you are multiplying, then add a 0. Every digit moves up one place: ones become tens.
10 × 7 = 70, 10 × 12 = 120Count in tens
Skip-count 10, 20, 30, 40… Each step adds one more ten.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60Double the 5s
Ten is two fives, so every 10s answer is the 5s answer doubled.
5 × 8 = 40 → 10 × 8 = 80Spot the pattern
Last digits of 10 × 1 to 10 × 10:
Always ends in 0. Every answer in the 10s ends in 0: 10, 20, 30 … 100, 110, 120.
Cover the 0. Cover the final 0 and you see the number you multiplied by: 10 × 4 = 40, 10 × 9 = 90, 10 × 11 = 110.
One column. On a hundred square the 10s fill just the last column: 10, 20, 30 … 100.
The matching division facts
Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 10 × 11 = 110, then 110 ÷ 10 = 11.
- 10 ÷ 10 = 1
- 20 ÷ 10 = 2
- 30 ÷ 10 = 3
- 40 ÷ 10 = 4
- 50 ÷ 10 = 5
- 60 ÷ 10 = 6
- 70 ÷ 10 = 7
- 80 ÷ 10 = 8
- 90 ÷ 10 = 9
- 100 ÷ 10 = 10
- 110 ÷ 10 = 11
- 120 ÷ 10 = 12
