7 × 6 = ?

How to learn the 7s

Each line means “7 groups of”. So 7 × 4 = 28 means four groups of 7 make 28. Every answer is just 7 more than the one before: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35…

The highlighted facts, 7 × 6 = 42, 7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 8 = 56, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

A week has 7 days. Three weeks are 7 × 3 = 21 days; a 12-week term is 7 × 12 = 84 days.

Tips & tricks

Four ways to make the 7s easy

You already know most of it

7 × 3 is the same as 3 × 7. If you know your 2s to 6s, the only new facts are 7 × 7, 7 × 8 and 7 × 9.

7 × 4 = 4 × 7 = 28

5, 6, 7, 8

56 = 7 × 8: the digits 5, 6, 7, 8 are in counting order. Saying “five, six, seven, eight” is the quickest way to remember it.

56 = 7 × 8

Split it into 5s and 2s

Seven is 5 + 2. Work out the 5s fact and the 2s fact, then add.

7 × 6 = 30 + 12 = 42

Build from a fact you know

Each answer is 7 more than the one before. Forgot 7 × 7? Start from 7 × 6 = 42.

7 × 7 = 42 + 7 = 49
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 7 × 1 to 7 × 10:

Every last digit, once. From 7 × 1 to 7 × 10 the last digits are 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0: every digit from 0 to 9 appears exactly once.

Diagonal stripes. On a hundred square each multiple of 7 sits 7 squares after the last, making slanting stripes.

Odd, even, odd, even. 7, 14, 21, 28 — adding an odd number flips odd to even and back.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 7 × 6 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6.

  • 7 ÷ 7 = 1
  • 14 ÷ 7 = 2
  • 21 ÷ 7 = 3
  • 28 ÷ 7 = 4
  • 35 ÷ 7 = 5
  • 42 ÷ 7 = 6
  • 49 ÷ 7 = 7
  • 56 ÷ 7 = 8
  • 63 ÷ 7 = 9
  • 70 ÷ 7 = 10
  • 77 ÷ 7 = 11
  • 84 ÷ 7 = 12
