6 × 6 = ?

How to learn the 6s

Each line means “6 groups of”. So 6 × 4 = 24 means four groups of 6 make 24. Every answer is just 6 more than the one before: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30…

The highlighted facts, 6 × 7 = 42, 6 × 8 = 48, 6 × 9 = 54 and 6 × 12 = 72, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

A half-dozen egg box holds 6 eggs. Four boxes hold 6 × 4 = 24 eggs; insects have 6 legs too.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 6s easy

The even-number trick

Multiply 6 by an even number (2, 4, 6, 8) and the answer ends in that same number. The tens digit is half of it.

6 × 8 = 48 (half of 8 is 4, then 8)

Five plus one more

6 × a number is the 5s answer plus one more of that number.

6 × 7 = 35 + 7 = 42

Double the 3s

Six is 3 doubled, so every 6s answer is a 3s answer doubled.

3 × 9 = 27 → 6 × 9 = 54
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 6 × 1 to 6 × 10:

Endings 6, 2, 8, 4, 0. The last digits repeat 6, 2, 8, 4, 0: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36… Every answer is even.

In two tables at once. Every 6s answer is also in the 2s and the 3s — and its digit sum is always 3, 6 or 9.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 6 = 7.

  • 6 ÷ 6 = 1
  • 12 ÷ 6 = 2
  • 18 ÷ 6 = 3
  • 24 ÷ 6 = 4
  • 30 ÷ 6 = 5
  • 36 ÷ 6 = 6
  • 42 ÷ 6 = 7
  • 48 ÷ 6 = 8
  • 54 ÷ 6 = 9
  • 60 ÷ 6 = 10
  • 66 ÷ 6 = 11
  • 72 ÷ 6 = 12
