How to learn the 5s

Each line means “5 groups of”. So 5 × 4 = 20 means four groups of 5 make 20. Every answer is just 5 more than the one before: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25…

The highlighted facts, 5 × 7 = 35, 5 × 9 = 45 and 5 × 12 = 60, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

Fingers on a hand, nickels in a pile: 6 nickels are 5 × 6 = 30 cents.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 5s easy

Odd ends in 5, even ends in 0

Multiply 5 by an odd number and the answer ends in 5. By an even number, it ends in 0.

5 × 7 = 35, 5 × 8 = 40

Ten times, then halve

Five is half of ten. Multiply by 10, then cut it in half.

5 × 12 = 120 ÷ 2 = 60

Read the clock

Each number on a clock face is 5 more minutes. When the minute hand points to 9, it’s 9 × 5 = 45 minutes past.

5 × 9 = 45
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 5 × 1 to 5 × 10:

Two columns. On a hundred square the 5s sit in just two columns: the 5 column and the 10 column.

5, 0, 5, 0. The endings alternate 5, 0, 5, 0 — so you can always tell if a number is in the 5s.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 5 × 7 = 35, then 35 ÷ 5 = 7.

  • 5 ÷ 5 = 1
  • 10 ÷ 5 = 2
  • 15 ÷ 5 = 3
  • 20 ÷ 5 = 4
  • 25 ÷ 5 = 5
  • 30 ÷ 5 = 6
  • 35 ÷ 5 = 7
  • 40 ÷ 5 = 8
  • 45 ÷ 5 = 9
  • 50 ÷ 5 = 10
  • 55 ÷ 5 = 11
  • 60 ÷ 5 = 12
