The 2 times table

The 2 times table is all about doubling. If you can add a number to itself, you already know the 2s.

  • 2×1=2
  • 2×2=4
  • 2×3=6
  • 2×4=8
  • 2×5=10
  • 2×6=12
  • 2×7=14
  • 2×8=16
  • 2×9=18
  • 2×10=20
  • 2×11=22
  • 2×12=24

2 × 6 = ?

How to learn the 2s

Each line means “2 groups of”. So 2 × 4 = 8 means four groups of 2 make 8. Every answer is just 2 more than the one before: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…

The highlighted facts, 2 × 7 = 14, 2 × 9 = 18 and 2 × 12 = 24, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

Things that come in pairs: shoes, socks, eyes, bike wheels. How many shoes do 7 people wear? 2 × 7 = 14.

Tips & tricks

Four ways to make the 2s easy

Just double it

2 × a number means that number plus itself. To find 2 × 8, add 8 + 8.

2 × 8 = 8 + 8 = 16

Count by twos

Skip-count 2, 4, 6, 8, 10… These are the even numbers, so every answer in the 2s is even.

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14

Step back from 10

2 × 10 = 20 is easy. For 2 × 9, take one 2 away.

2 × 9 = 20 − 2 = 18

A ladder to the 4s and 8s

Double a 2s answer to get the 4s answer. Double again for the 8s.

2 × 6 = 12 → 4 × 6 = 24 → 8 × 6 = 48
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 2 × 1 to 2 × 10:

Endings repeat every five. The last digits go 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 and then start again: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Every other number. On a hundred square the 2s fill every second column — all the even numbers.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 2 × 7 = 14, then 14 ÷ 2 = 7.

  • 2 ÷ 2 = 1
  • 4 ÷ 2 = 2
  • 6 ÷ 2 = 3
  • 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  • 10 ÷ 2 = 5
  • 12 ÷ 2 = 6
  • 14 ÷ 2 = 7
  • 16 ÷ 2 = 8
  • 18 ÷ 2 = 9
  • 20 ÷ 2 = 10
  • 22 ÷ 2 = 11
  • 24 ÷ 2 = 12
