How to learn the 18s

Each line means “18 groups of”. So 18 × 4 = 72 means four groups of 18 make 72. Every answer is just 18 more than the one before: 18, 36, 54, 72, 90…

The highlighted facts, 18 × 6 = 108, 18 × 7 = 126, 18 × 8 = 144 and 18 × 12 = 216, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

A golf course has 18 holes. Playing it twice is 18 × 2 = 36 holes.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 18s easy

Double the 9s

Find the 9s answer, then double it.

9 × 7 = 63 → 18 × 7 = 126

Twenty minus two

18 is 2 less than 20. Work out 20 × the number, then take away two of it.

18 × 6 = 120 − 12 = 108

The digit check

Keep adding the digits of an 18s answer until one digit is left — you always get 9.

18 × 7 = 126 → 1 + 2 + 6 = 9
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 18 × 1 to 18 × 10:

Endings count down by 2. 18, 36, 54, 72, 90: the last digits go 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 — like the 8s.

Every other 9. Count in 9s and keep every second answer: 9, (18), 27, (36), 45, (54).

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 18 × 6 = 108, then 108 ÷ 18 = 6.

  • 18 ÷ 18 = 1
  • 36 ÷ 18 = 2
  • 54 ÷ 18 = 3
  • 72 ÷ 18 = 4
  • 90 ÷ 18 = 5
  • 108 ÷ 18 = 6
  • 126 ÷ 18 = 7
  • 144 ÷ 18 = 8
  • 162 ÷ 18 = 9
  • 180 ÷ 18 = 10
  • 198 ÷ 18 = 11
  • 216 ÷ 18 = 12
