The 17 times table
Seventeen is a prime number, so no smaller table is hiding inside it. Split it into 10 and 7 and every 17s fact becomes two facts you already know.
- 17×1=17
- 17×2=34
- 17×3=51
- 17×4=68
- 17×5=85
- 17×6=102
- 17×7=119
- 17×8=136
- 17×9=153
- 17×10=170
- 17×11=187
- 17×12=204
How to learn the 17s
Each line means “17 groups of”. So 17 × 4 = 68 means four groups of 17 make 68. Every answer is just 17 more than the one before: 17, 34, 51, 68, 85…
The highlighted facts, 17 × 7 = 119, 17 × 8 = 136 and 17 × 9 = 153, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.
Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.
In real life
A haiku has 17 syllables. A page of 8 haiku has 17 × 8 = 136 syllables.
Four ways to make the 17s easy
Ten plus seven
Do the 10s fact and the 7s fact, then add them.
17 × 8 = 80 + 56 = 136Twenty minus three
Work out 20 × the number, then take away three of it. Handy when the 7s fact is the tricky part.
17 × 6 = 120 − 18 = 102Double, double, double
For × 2, × 4 and × 8, just keep doubling 17.
17 → 34 → 68 → 136 (17 × 8)One step past the 16s
If you know a 16s answer, add the number once more.
16 × 9 = 144 → 17 × 9 = 144 + 9 = 153Spot the pattern
Last digits of 17 × 1 to 17 × 10:
Endings like the 7s. From 17 × 1 to 17 × 10 the last digits are 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0: every digit once, in the same order as the 7s.
Two anchors: 51 and 102. 17 × 3 = 51 and 17 × 6 = 102 sit just past 50 and 100. Count on from them: 17 × 7 = 102 + 17 = 119.
Really new facts. Because 17 is prime, none of its answers appear anywhere in the 2s to 16s up to × 12. That is why the 10 + 7 split matters more here than in most tables.
The matching division facts
Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 17 × 7 = 119, then 119 ÷ 17 = 7.
- 17 ÷ 17 = 1
- 34 ÷ 17 = 2
- 51 ÷ 17 = 3
- 68 ÷ 17 = 4
- 85 ÷ 17 = 5
- 102 ÷ 17 = 6
- 119 ÷ 17 = 7
- 136 ÷ 17 = 8
- 153 ÷ 17 = 9
- 170 ÷ 17 = 10
- 187 ÷ 17 = 11
- 204 ÷ 17 = 12
