The 19 times table

Nineteen is one less than 20, so every 19s fact is a 20s fact with one of the number taken away.

  • 19×1=19
  • 19×2=38
  • 19×3=57
  • 19×4=76
  • 19×5=95
  • 19×6=114
  • 19×7=133
  • 19×8=152
  • 19×9=171
  • 19×10=190
  • 19×11=209
  • 19×12=228

19 × 6 = ?

How to learn the 19s

Each line means “19 groups of”. So 19 × 4 = 76 means four groups of 19 make 76. Every answer is just 19 more than the one before: 19, 38, 57, 76, 95…

The highlighted facts, 19 × 6 = 114, 19 × 7 = 133, 19 × 8 = 152 and 19 × 9 = 171, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

Four tickets at $19 cost $80 (four $20 tickets) minus $4: 19 × 4 = $76.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 19s easy

Twenty minus one

Work out 20 × the number (the 2s with a zero), then take the number away once.

19 × 7 = 140 − 7 = 133

Ten plus nine

Or split 19 into 10 and 9 and add the two answers.

19 × 6 = 60 + 54 = 114

Borrow the 9s ending

The last digit of a 19s answer is the same as the last digit of the 9s answer. Use it to check.

9 × 8 = 72 → 19 × 8 = 152 (ends in 2)
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 19 × 1 to 19 × 10:

Endings count down. 19, 38, 57, 76, 95, 114, 133, 152, 171, 190: the last digits go 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, exactly like the 9s.

Up 2 tens, down 1. Each step adds 2 to the tens and takes 1 from the ones: 19 → 38 → 57 → 76 → 95. That is the “add 20, take 1” trick happening in the digits.

Another prime. Like 17, 19 is prime, so its answers are new facts that show up in no smaller table up to × 12.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 19 × 6 = 114, then 114 ÷ 19 = 6.

  • 19 ÷ 19 = 1
  • 38 ÷ 19 = 2
  • 57 ÷ 19 = 3
  • 76 ÷ 19 = 4
  • 95 ÷ 19 = 5
  • 114 ÷ 19 = 6
  • 133 ÷ 19 = 7
  • 152 ÷ 19 = 8
  • 171 ÷ 19 = 9
  • 190 ÷ 19 = 10
  • 209 ÷ 19 = 11
  • 228 ÷ 19 = 12
