The 21 times table

Twenty-one is 3 × 7, so the 21s are the 7s tripled. Most learners find the 20 + 1 split even faster: the 2s with a zero, plus the number once.

  • 21×1=21
  • 21×2=42
  • 21×3=63
  • 21×4=84
  • 21×5=105
  • 21×6=126
  • 21×7=147
  • 21×8=168
  • 21×9=189
  • 21×10=210
  • 21×11=231
  • 21×12=252

How to learn the 21s

Each line means “21 groups of”. So 21 × 4 = 84 means four groups of 21 make 84. Every answer is just 21 more than the one before: 21, 42, 63, 84, 105…

The highlighted facts, 21 × 7 = 147, 21 × 8 = 168 and 21 × 9 = 189, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.

Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.

In real life

Three weeks are 21 days, so 21 × 4 = 84 days is twelve weeks, about three months.

Tips & tricks

Three ways to make the 21s easy

Twenty plus one

Work out 20 × the number, then add the number once more.

21 × 8 = 160 + 8 = 168

Triple the 7s

Find the 7s answer and multiply it by 3.

7 × 9 = 63 → 21 × 9 = 63 × 3 = 189

Check the last digit

A 21s answer always ends in the same digit as the number you multiply by.

21 × 7 = 147 (ends in 7), 21 × 12 = 252 (ends in 2)
Patterns

Spot the pattern

Last digits of 21 × 1 to 21 × 10:

Ends like the 1s. 21, 42, 63, 84, 105, 126, 147: the last digits go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the same as the number of steps.

Double the ones. For 21 × 1 to 21 × 4 the tens digit is double the ones digit: 21, 42, 63, 84.

A multiple of 3 and 7. Every 21s answer is a multiple of both 3 and 7. So its digits always add up to 3, 6 or 9 (keep adding): 168 → 1 + 6 + 8 = 15 → 6.

Division

The matching division facts

Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 21 × 7 = 147, then 147 ÷ 21 = 7.

  • 21 ÷ 21 = 1
  • 42 ÷ 21 = 2
  • 63 ÷ 21 = 3
  • 84 ÷ 21 = 4
  • 105 ÷ 21 = 5
  • 126 ÷ 21 = 6
  • 147 ÷ 21 = 7
  • 168 ÷ 21 = 8
  • 189 ÷ 21 = 9
  • 210 ÷ 21 = 10
  • 231 ÷ 21 = 11
  • 252 ÷ 21 = 12
