The 24 times table
Twenty-four has more ways in than any number before it: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 all divide it. And a day has 24 hours, so the 24s turn days into hours.
- 24×1=24
- 24×2=48
- 24×3=72
- 24×4=96
- 24×5=120
- 24×6=144
- 24×7=168
- 24×8=192
- 24×9=216
- 24×10=240
- 24×11=264
- 24×12=288
How to learn the 24s
Each line means “24 groups of”. So 24 × 4 = 96 means four groups of 24 make 96. Every answer is just 24 more than the one before: 24, 48, 72, 96, 120…
The highlighted facts, 24 × 7 = 168, 24 × 8 = 192, 24 × 9 = 216 and 24 × 12 = 288, are the ones learners usually find hardest. The tips below give you a way into each one.
Self-test: press “Hide answers”, say each answer out loud, then tap a fact to check it.
In real life
A day has 24 hours, so a week has 24 × 7 = 168 hours.
Four ways to make the 24s easy
Double the 12s
Find the 12s answer, then double it.
12 × 7 = 84 → 24 × 7 = 168Twenty-five minus one
The 25s are easy (quarters). Work out 25 × the number, then take the number away once.
24 × 8 = 200 − 8 = 192Twenty plus four
Split 24 into 20 and 4 and add the answers.
24 × 9 = 180 + 36 = 216Days into hours
Every 24s fact is a number of days turned into hours.
3 days = 24 × 3 = 72 hoursSpot the pattern
Last digits of 24 × 1 to 24 × 10:
Endings like the 4s. 24, 48, 72, 96, 120: the last digits repeat 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, the same as the 4s, so every answer is even.
Six numbers divide it. Every 24s answer is also a multiple of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12, which makes the 24s easy to check.
Meet 144 again. 24 × 6 = 144, the same as 12 × 12 and 16 × 9. And 24 × 12 = 288 is twice that.
The matching division facts
Every multiplication fact gives you a division fact for free. If 24 × 7 = 168, then 168 ÷ 24 = 7.
- 24 ÷ 24 = 1
- 48 ÷ 24 = 2
- 72 ÷ 24 = 3
- 96 ÷ 24 = 4
- 120 ÷ 24 = 5
- 144 ÷ 24 = 6
- 168 ÷ 24 = 7
- 192 ÷ 24 = 8
- 216 ÷ 24 = 9
- 240 ÷ 24 = 10
- 264 ÷ 24 = 11
- 288 ÷ 24 = 12
